In a bid to accelerate food security and agricultural innovation, the Governor of Niger State, His Excellency Mohammed Umar Bago, has initiated a strategic partnership with the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), with plans underway to establish seed multiplication centres and expand access to approved improved crop varieties. The Farmer Governor of Niger State stated this during a courtesy visit to the Director-General/CEO of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Bello Bawa Bwari, at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja today (1st April 2026).
Governor Bago commended the Director-General for his leadership and the renewed direction of the Agency, affirming the State Government’s commitment to partnering with NBMA and relevant agricultural institutions to drive increased food production and innovation. The visit marked a significant step toward aligning Niger State’s agricultural transformation agenda with Nigeria’s national biosafety regulatory framework, particularly in the areas of food security, safe deployment of modern biotechnology, and access to improved seeds.

Welcoming the Governor, the Director-General emphasized NBMA’s central role in enabling safe agricultural innovation through a science-based and enforceable regulatory system. He noted that with the commercialization of Bt cotton, Bt cowpea, and TELA maize, Nigeria is already witnessing tangible gains in yield improvement, pest control, and climate resilience, benefits that are especially critical for an agricultural powerhouse like Niger State. Bwari further disclosed that NBMA is working closely with the Niger State Government and relevant partners to strengthen research collaboration in the State. He described the initiative as a strategic intervention to ensure that farmers have timely access to quality, approved seeds while maintaining strict regulatory oversight.
The Director-General appreciated the Governor’s visit and reiterated NBMA’s commitment to providing regulatory leadership that supports food security, food sovereignty, and sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria. As part of the visit, the Director-General presented an award of recognition to Governor Bago in acknowledgement of his exemplary leadership and contributions to advancing agricultural development and institutional collaboration.

NBMA Issues Warning Against False Employment Claims on Unofficial Websites
The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) is alerting the public of the proliferation of fake employment sites fraudulently claiming to be associated with the agency. The NBMA understands the concerns and frustration these misleading websites can cause, and wishes to clarify that it has no association with any unauthorized employment platforms.
NBMA is the regulatory body responsible for the oversight, regulation, and management of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Nigeria. We take our responsibilities seriously and are committed to ensuring transparency, integrity, and fairness in all our operations, including the recruitment and employment process.
However, it has come to our attention that several unofficial websites and online platforms are falsely claiming to be affiliated with the NBMA and misleading job seekers by advertising false employment opportunities. These impostors often request personal information and even payment from unsuspecting individuals in exchange for job offers, creating significant distress and financial losses.
The NBMA wants to emphasize that it does not advertise vacancies or accept job applications through any non-official channels, including external websites or social media platforms. All employment opportunities are published according to the federal government laid down procedure through the civil service commission. Any other sources claiming to represent the NBMA should be treated with caution and reported immediately.
