The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) wishes to inform the public of recent developments concerning the registration of four new transgenic cotton hybrid varieties in Nigeria - MIC 561 BGII, MIC 563 BGII, BIOSEED-FIYAH CH1001, BIOSEED-FIYAH CH1002.
The Agency, through its regulatory surveillance and compliance-monitoring mechanisms, identified serious compliance abnormalities in these varieties. Subsequent verification established that the cotton varieties were registered by the National Committee on Naming, Registration and Release of Crop Varieties, Livestock Breeds and Fisheries on the 26th of March 2026 without the requisite approval of NBMA, as required under the National Biosafety Management Act 2015 (as amended).

Further findings confirm that confined field trials and related activities involving these transgenic varieties were conducted without prior authorization, inspection, or regulatory oversight by the Agency. At no time did the National Biosafety Management Agency grant any approval for the confined field trials, multi-locational trials, or commercial release of the new GM cotton varieties.
Under the NBMA Act, it is instructive to note that no person or institution is permitted to conduct confined field trials, multi-locational trials, or the commercial release of genetically modified organisms without the explicit approval of NBMA. Any action taken outside this framework constitutes a violation of national biosafety regulations. In response to these issues highlighted, the Agency has directed the National Committee on Naming, Registration and Release of Crop Varieties, Livestock Breeds and Fisheries to suspend any further action on the registration and release of these varieties pending the outcome of ongoing investigations. The Agency will apply all appropriate regulatory measures and sanctions as provided under the law. The NBMA assures all Nigerians that the Agency handling this matter with all seriousness. There is no evidence at this time of any immediate risk to public health or the environment and all necessary steps are being taken to ensure continued safety and regulatory integrity.
The National Biosafety Management Agency remains committed to ensuring that all modern biotechnology activities in Nigeria are conducted in strict compliance with national laws and international best practices. The public will be kept informed as the investigations progress.
NBMA Issues Warning Against False Employment Claims on Unofficial Websites
The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) is alerting the public of the proliferation of fake employment sites fraudulently claiming to be associated with the agency. The NBMA understands the concerns and frustration these misleading websites can cause, and wishes to clarify that it has no association with any unauthorized employment platforms.
NBMA is the regulatory body responsible for the oversight, regulation, and management of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Nigeria. We take our responsibilities seriously and are committed to ensuring transparency, integrity, and fairness in all our operations, including the recruitment and employment process.
However, it has come to our attention that several unofficial websites and online platforms are falsely claiming to be affiliated with the NBMA and misleading job seekers by advertising false employment opportunities. These impostors often request personal information and even payment from unsuspecting individuals in exchange for job offers, creating significant distress and financial losses.
The NBMA wants to emphasize that it does not advertise vacancies or accept job applications through any non-official channels, including external websites or social media platforms. All employment opportunities are published according to the federal government laid down procedure through the civil service commission. Any other sources claiming to represent the NBMA should be treated with caution and reported immediately.
Kindly note that the NBMA will continue to provide authentic and transparent information regarding employment opportunities solely through our official channels.
