Confined Field Trials (CFTs) are a vital component of biosafety evaluation, enabling researchers to assess the safety and efficacy of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or other biological agents in a controlled outdoor setting. These trials play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe development and deployment of GMOs, while minimizing potential risks to the environment and human health.
The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA)being the number one GMO regulatory body in Nigeria utilizes Confined Field Trials (CFTs) as a crucial step in ensuring biosafety when dealing with genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
By using CFTs, NBMA ensures that GMOs are thoroughly evaluated for potential risks and benefits before being approved for commercial release or wider use. This approach helps protect human health, animal health, and the environment while promoting the safe development and deployment of biotechnology products .
What are Confined Field Trials?
CFTs are carefully designed experiments conducted in a contained outdoor environment, where GMOs or biological agents are tested under controlled conditions. These trials are typically conducted in a field setting, but with strict protocols in place to prevent the escape or spread of the GMOs or biological agents beyond the trial site.1. Safety Evaluation: CFTs provide a controlled environment to evaluate the safety and efficacy of GMOs or biological agents before larger-scale releases.
2. Regulatory Compliance: CFTs are often required by regulatory agencies such as the (NBMA) to ensure compliance with safety protocols and guidelines.
3. Scientific Research: CFTs advance understanding of GMOs and their interactions with the environment, informing future research and development.
4. Environmental Protection: CFTs help prevent unintended consequences of GMOs or biological agents on ecosystems and biodiversity.
5. Risk Assessment: CFTs enable researchers to assess the potential risks associated with GMOs or biological agents, including their impact on the environment and human health
*Key points to know about Confined field trials
CFTs are characterized by several key features, including:
1. Physical Containment: Trials are designed to prevent the escape or spread of GMOs or biological agents beyond the trial site.
2. Regulatory Oversight: CFTs are conducted under the supervision of regulatory agencies such as (NBMA)to ensure compliance with safety protocols.
3. Risk Assessment: Trials are designed to identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
How are Confined Field Trials beneficial to us?
CFTs offer several benefits, including:
1. Improved Biosafety: CFTs help prevent unintended consequences of GMOs or biological agents on the environment and human health.
2. Regulatory Compliance: CFTs ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and guidelines for GMO testing.
3. Scientific Research: CFTs advance understanding of GMOs and their interactions with the environment.
4.Informed Decision-Making: CFTs provide valuable data to inform regulatory decisions and policy-making.
Some CFTs carried out under the NBMA supervision include:
Soybean : Trials have been conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of genetically modified soybean varieties
Potato:Confined Field trials have been conducted to access the safety and efficacy of genetically modified varieties, including resistance to late blight
How does Confined field trials (CFTs)concern you?
Confined Field Trials are a crucial step in the biosafety evaluation process, enabling researchers to assess the safety and efficacy of GMOs or other biological agents in a controlled outdoor setting. By conducting CFTs, researchers and regulators can work together to ensure the safe development and deployment of GMOs, while minimizing potential risks to the environment and human health.

NBMA Issues Warning Against False Employment Claims on Unofficial Websites
The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) is alerting the public of the proliferation of fake employment sites fraudulently claiming to be associated with the agency. The NBMA understands the concerns and frustration these misleading websites can cause, and wishes to clarify that it has no association with any unauthorized employment platforms.
NBMA is the regulatory body responsible for the oversight, regulation, and management of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Nigeria. We take our responsibilities seriously and are committed to ensuring transparency, integrity, and fairness in all our operations, including the recruitment and employment process.
However, it has come to our attention that several unofficial websites and online platforms are falsely claiming to be affiliated with the NBMA and misleading job seekers by advertising false employment opportunities. These impostors often request personal information and even payment from unsuspecting individuals in exchange for job offers, creating significant distress and financial losses.
The NBMA wants to emphasize that it does not advertise vacancies or accept job applications through any non-official channels, including external websites or social media platforms. All employment opportunities are published according to the federal government laid down procedure through the civil service commission. Any other sources claiming to represent the NBMA should be treated with caution and reported immediately.
Kindly note that the NBMA will continue to provide authentic and transparent information regarding employment opportunities solely through our official channels.
